Safety and security with election preparedness

Elections are a means to democratic freedom for any society, and with every democratic process lies the potential for conflict. Amongst the people most affected during such times such as young children and women are the most vulnerable LGBTIQ persons in society. With Intersex, Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming (I.T.GNC) persons amongst the lot being visibly different, are thus opened up more to the potential of being targeted with violence.

One of the pillars of our work being security is crucial during such times to ensure that ITGNC persons are safe, protected and not targeted due to their uniqueness within society.

Many human rights protection groups intensify their work during such times to ensure that human rights defenders, the community and most vulnerable groups have the tools to sustain them as well as those around them during such times.

Jinsiangu as one of the beneficiaries to the work by protection groups was engaged in a security management training and assessment of security preparedness held by the Defenders Coalition for Sexual & Gender minority human rights defenders. The core purpose being to equip organizations and human rights defenders with skills to be able to protect themselves as well as their communities as they respond to security cases physically and digitally during this election period.

Our work over the next couple of weeks leading up to the elections, during and after is to ensure that proper structures are in place to respond, document and mitigate any risks and occurrences that might affect the community. Not limited to community centered safety and security workshops, these interventions help mitigate and get prevent any threats that are beyond Jinsiangu’s response reach.
